The Heart Behind Beansprout Academy
Beansprout Academy of Fort Mill was founded by Katie Mauk, an experienced early childhood educator who has dedicated her career to helping children learn and thrive. Originally from Ohio, Katie studied Early Childhood Education at Bowling Green State University and later earned a Bachelor’s degree in Fashion Merchandise and Marketing from the Art Institute of Charlotte.
Her creative background, combined with a strong foundation in education, continues to shape the warm, engaging learning environment that defines Beansprout Academy today. Katie’s vision has always been simple yet powerful — to build a preschool where every child feels seen, supported, and inspired to grow.
From Experience to Inspiration
With over a decade of experience in childcare and early education, Katie developed a deep understanding of how children learn best—through exploration, discovery, and play. Inspired by her passion for creating a nurturing, high-quality educational setting, she co-founded Beansprout Academy as a place where infants, toddlers, and preschoolers could grow confidently at every stage of early development.
Katie’s two children, Maizee and Vinnie, were among the first students to attend Beansprout Academy from infancy through pre-kindergarten. Watching them flourish within the program affirmed her belief in the importance of early learning that is both structured and imaginative—a belief that continues to guide the Academy’s philosophy today.
As both an educator and a parent, Katie also recognized the everyday challenges families face—especially when balancing busy mornings, work schedules, and quality time together. That understanding inspired her decision to include healthy, organic meals in tuition and offer enriching extracurricular activities such as soccer, gymnastics, and creative arts. She believes every child deserves access to nutritious food and diverse experiences that nurture confidence, coordination, and joy—without adding stress to a parent’s already full day.
A Montessori-Inspired Approach to Early Learning
Beansprout Academy follows a Montessori-inspired, play-based philosophy, focusing on each child’s individual development and natural curiosity. The Academy’s classrooms are thoughtfully designed for infants, toddlers, and preschoolers, encouraging hands-on learning, independence, and problem-solving while maintaining a balance between structure and creativity.
Teachers meet children where they are—supporting emotional, social, cognitive, and physical growth at every age and stage. Through this approach, children are empowered to take an active role in their learning journey, discovering new ideas through guided play, imagination, and exploration.
Partnership with Families
At the heart of Beansprout Academy’s success is a strong partnership with families. The school believes that early education is most impactful when teachers and parents work together through open, ongoing communication. This collaboration ensures smooth transitions, meaningful relationships, and a shared sense of belonging that extends beyond the classroom.
Parents are encouraged to participate in their child’s educational journey, celebrating milestones and engaging in the vibrant, caring community that defines the Academy.
